Beginning August 1, 2026, Colorado law requires individuals purchasing certain semi-automatic firearms (SSF) to complete a state-approved firearms safety course before purchase.

4-Hour Firearms Safety Course
For individuals who qualify for Colorado's abbreviated training option who are eligible hunter education certificate holders.

What to Expect

You will need to have an eligibility card before you can take this class. You can get one from your county sheriff's department.

You will not need a firearm to attend. Training aids will be provided for demonstrations and practical exam.

NO LIVE AMMO is allowed in the classroom

This will be a classroom setting. No live fire will be conducted.

Periodic breaks will be given throughout training

You will be required to take a written exam (passing with 90% or better)
